When to visit the Quebec ice hotel at Valcartier

The Hôtel de Glace exists for only part of the year, and the other winter outings around Quebec City each run on their own clock. Snow cover and river ice decide most of it, with daylight close behind. This guide lines them up so you can pick your week.

An ice hotel that is rebuilt every winter

The Hôtel de Glace has risen every winter for more than twenty years from snow and tons of ice. It now stands at Village Vacances Valcartier and is taken down again in spring.

Because it is rebuilt from scratch, the opening depends on the cold. The work needs steady freezing weather, so the first day shifts a little from one winter to the next.

Expect it to be open roughly January to March, and check the opening date on the listing before you book flights. Mid or late March usually marks the end, once the thaw sets in.

Booking before the doors open

Viator's ice hotel listings show as not bookable until the season opens. In autumn that can look like a closed attraction, but it only means the dates are not loaded yet.

GetYourGuide usually lets you pick a date once tickets go on sale. The self-guided ice hotel visit from ~$29 holds 4.7 from 590+ reviews on GetYourGuide, and you can reserve now and pay later.

A day ticket for the Hôtel de Glace

The self-guided visit from ~$29 covers admission to the themed rooms and suites plus the bar and chapel. Parking is included too. Getting to Valcartier is up to you, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours ahead on GetYourGuide.

Overnight stays are a separate matter. You can also book a night in one of the ice suites directly with the hotel, which this site does not sell.

Picking a month from January to March

Each month trades cold against daylight in its own way, and the crowds shift with the carnival. The list below sets the three months side by side.

  • January: the ice hotel opens some time in the month, once the build is done. Days are at their shortest, with darkness by about 5 pm
  • February: the hotel is usually fully open and snow cover tends to be reliable. The Quebec Winter Carnival fills the city for part of the month
  • March: longer days and milder air, but the ice hotel closes in mid or late March. Snow and river ice can fade toward the end

If you want every outing on our list to be running, February is the safest bet. That is a tendency rather than a promise, because a mild spell can thin the snow or the river ice in any week.

Snow for the tubing and the snowmobile

Snow tubing at Valcartier and snowmobiling on Île d'Orléans both need good snow cover. That usually means roughly late December to March, with the surest weeks in the heart of winter.

The snowmobile ride from ~$153 lasts 1.5 hours on the island. Our snowmobile guide explains the licence rule for drivers, which matters more than the date you pick.

The tubing park opens day or night on its listing. An evening on the slides pairs well with the ice hotel at dusk, a plan we set out in our Valcartier day guide.

The snowshoe day in Jacques-Cartier National Park needs snow as well, and Quatre Natures runs it only in fair weather with a minimum number of guests. A storm can move it, so treat its date as provisional.

Ice on the St Lawrence

The ice canoe needs floating ice on the river, which usually forms from about January to March. Crews paddle open water and push the canoe over the floes, and the route changes with the weather and the tides.

Poor weather or too few people means a new date or a full refund, and you can cancel only up to 4 days before. Book the ice canoe from ~$207 early in your stay, so a moved date still fits.

The Quebec Winter Carnival runs in late January and February and includes an ice canoe race on the river. It also brings crowds, so rooms tend to fill sooner around carnival weekends.

Short days and cold nights

In January it is dark by about 5 pm in Quebec City. Plan outdoor outings for the middle of the day, and leave the ice hotel for late afternoon, when the lighting inside becomes part of the show.

The ice hotel ticket is valid for the whole day and the visit is self-guided. You can arrive whenever the light suits you, with no slot to catch.

Cold snaps can push toward −25 °C (−13 °F), while milder days creep above freezing. Pack for both ends, and read our guide to dressing at minus 25 before you fly.

Strøm Nordic Spa runs all year, so it is the one outing on our list that ignores the calendar. It makes a sound fallback when the river ice or the snow lets you down.

Weekday visits and a spare day

Weekdays tend to be quieter than weekends at Valcartier, though we have no figures to prove it. If your dates are flexible, put the ice hotel on a Tuesday or Wednesday rather than a Saturday.

Leave one spare day for weather. Our three-day winter plan orders the outings so a moved booking does not wreck the trip, and our transport guide covers the drive out to Valcartier.

Families planning around school holidays should also look at the age limits. Our guide to winter outings with kids lists them for every tour.

Check the ice hotel's opening date on the listing before you book anything that cannot be cancelled. Flights and hotels are harder to move than a ~$29 ticket.
